Even Pilate verified this when the chief priests lied about Jesus to him.

What Are the Enemies of the Habit

of Honoring the Government?

1. Distrust—I don’t trust the government.

2. Disagreement—I don’t agree with the government.

3. Blame—I’m in this mess because of the government.

4. Ignorance—The government is after me.

Make Honoring the Government a Habit

1. Thank God for the government.

Its laws allow you to live in a civil society. Rather than complain about the government, begin thanking God for your country. Thank him for the laws that help to create order within society and offer protection for every citizen.

2. Pray specifically for government leaders—national, state, county, local.

It is our duty to pray for our elected officials. Each day they are confronted with decisions that will affect our lives. Intercession for them is vital if we expect them to make right decisions.

3. Support the military.

Pray for the military. Pray for a strong defense. Do everything possible to express your appreciation for our men and women in uniform. They depend upon our prayers. Military might, as comforting as that is, is no substitute for the power of God that comes as a result of prayer.

4. Pay your taxes.

That is not to suggest that you agree with how your tax money is being spent. It is to suggest that it is our responsibility as citizens, and especially as Christians, to pay our taxes. It allows us to receive the many benefits of living in this great country.

5. Vote your convictions.

Walt Whitman said, “Bad officials are elected by good citizens who do not vote.” Christian convictions, not party loyalty, should be the filter through which we cast our votes.

6. Get involved in government.

Run for office or support godly and wise people who do. Ask God how he wants you to get involved. Don’t shut out the possibility that he may want you to run for some office or help some candidate get elected.

7. Write to government leaders not only when you disagree or want them to do something, but also to say, “thank you” for what they are doing right.

There is power in writing a letter. When you disagree with a decision an elected official has made, write to that person and

lovingly and tactfully express your opinion. On the other hand, when an elected official makes the right decision, use a letter as an occasion for affirmation.

Webster Didn’t Just Write a Dictionary

One of America’s well-known Colonial Americans began his career as a schoolteacher, using the Bible as his most valued textbook. Noah Webster was born in Connecticut and came of age during the American Revolution. He was educated at Yale University, and when he lacked the funds for further studies, he became a teacher. His early impressions of Colonial classrooms were disparaging; they were crowded, disorganized, and poorly equipped. But he continued to teach because he believed the children of our new nation should be taught to honor God’s Word and to learn the moral laws in the Scriptures. He also believed that Americans should have American books from which to learn spelling and grammar.
